Brittany Davis ’13 and Toireasa Howard ’12 (Sociology) presented their papers at the New England Sociological Research Conference on Friday, April 27 at Bryant University in Rhode Island.
Brittany’s paper, “Kenya’s history of land rights issues, political and ethnic conflict: The 2007 election and the implication for education, healthcare and the future of democracy for Kenya,” was her semester paper for the Global Development seminar in which she explored political and ethnic conflict during 2007 presidential election in Kenya.
Toireasa’s paper, “Structural changes in voter participation rituals among American voters,” was part of the Social Theory course in which she analyzed how the sociological frameworks of Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, and Max Weber account for the new ritual of participation in campaigning and the revolution in presidential campaign methods, as well as provide statistical evidence for its remarkable effect on voter enfranchisement that occurred in 2008, which propelled an African-American to the highest office in the United States.
Fortunata Songora Makene (Sociology) supervised these works.
