Joan “Jay” Mahoney (Business Administration and Economics) is one of two Enactus faculty advisors from around the country to receive the 2017 Jack Kahl Entrepreneurial Leadership Award for Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellows of the Year.
This award recognizes two Sam Walton Fellows “who have done the most to advance the entire Enactus organization during the current academic year, who have made outstanding contributions to Enactus students and the team on their campus, including helping students with career placement.”
Members and alumni of Worcester State’s Enactus team nominated Mahoney, who has been an Enactus advisor since 2004. In their nomination letters, they highlighted Mahoney’s tireless dedication to the team and ability to build their self-confidence and coach them in their various roles.
She goes “above and beyond to teach students the skills they will need in the real world” as well as “encourages students to push themselves to their full potential,” noted Daniel Figueiredo, a 2015 graduate and former president of Worcester State Enactus who is now a financial analyst at Sun Life Financial and current member of the Worcester State Enactus Business Advisory Board.
“All my Enactus success and incredible experiences have been because of her,” wrote Jemini Patel, who graduated in May and was a member of the Student Advisory Committee for Enactus. “She has helped me grow as a leader and as the confident and outspoken girl that I am today.”
Enactus at Worcester State has grown to over 65 members. The team has been Enactus regional champions for the past two years. In 2016, the team placed in the top 20 in the Enactus national exposition. This year, the team placed in the top 46 at nationals.
As part of the award, Mahoney received a fully paid trip to the Enactus World Cup in London.
Enactus (Entrepreneurial Action Us) is an international organization of college students that enables progress through entrepreneurial action.
