More than 130 golfers gathered on August 7 for the second annual George Albro ’65 Memorial Golf Tournament, raising more than $14,000 for Worcester State student athletes. The tournament was supported by more than 30 sponsors, including businesses, alumni, and parents.
Thirty-four teams of Worcester State coaches, students, alumni, and other supporters competed in the 18-hole tournament held at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club in Boylston. Alongside the round of golf, the event raised funds for the Athletics Department through a silent auction, various raffles, and donor contributions.
Previously known as the Lancer Tournament, it was renamed in 2022 in honor of George Albro, a dedicated Worcester State alumnus, educator, and coach who passed away in 2021. Worcester State Athletics Director Mike Mudd described Albro as “synonymous with Worcester State Athletics.” He played basketball as a Lancer from 1961 to 1965, winning a championship with the team in the 1961-62 season. Albro later returned to Worcester State as a basketball coach, and was inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1989.
Members of the Albro family helped as golf committee volunteers, participating golfers, and tournament sponsors. Lillian Albro, his wife of 55 years, said she was thrilled with how it turned out this year. “The focus was on the students,” said Lillian, “which is what George would’ve liked.”
The funds raised by this year’s tournament will be used for various purposes within the Athletics Department, including purchasing team apparel, traveling costs associated with an overnight trip, and team bonding activities. “Fundraising events such as this help support athletics at Worcester State at a time when generating revenue internally for the Athletics Department in order to support student-athletes is more important than ever,” Mudd said.
