Chandler’s Challenge returns for sixth year of student-led fundraising

Chandler’s Challenge will return for the sixth year on February 5. Over two days, athletic teams and campus organizations will race against the clock to get the most donors and raise money through word-of-mouth fundraising. Online giving opens at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2.

The student-led competition is broken into two tournament brackets: athletic teams and campus organizations, who compete separately from one another. For each stage of the tournament, the team that has the higher donor score advances to the next round. The scores are reset after each round finishes, and the groups that move on start fresh at a score of zero in their next round.

“It’s fun, it’s competitive, and it gives everybody the opportunity to see what different groups exist on campus,” said Caitlyn Costello ‘13, assistant director of development for University Advancement.

Last year, students raised more than $54,000 during Chandler’s Challenge. Every dollar that is donated to a club or team goes directly to supporting that group. These funds help cover costs such as equipment and travel expenses for athletics, and special events sponsored by student organizations.

In addition to donor contributions, there are $6,000 worth of bonus prizes that teams can win this year, which are split evenly between the brackets. The first and second place winners will receive an additional $1,000 and $500 respectively, and the team that receives the most donations from Worcester State alumni will win a $500 bonus as well. There will also be four Power Hours over the course of the 48 hour competition. The teams that have the most donors during these periods will win an extra $250.
