Worcester State’s Special 150th Anniversary issue is arriving in mailboxes around the state and country and is now live online at worcester.edu/magazine. The magazine tells the story of the university’s 150th anniversary theme, Our Place, Our Purpose, through four themes: Impact, Belonging, Community and Teaching.
The largest magazine in recent history, it includes 74 stories, 97 photos, and 42 custom illustrations, with first-person profiles of 40 Outstanding Alumni Making a Difference. The university’s remarkable 150 year history is chronicled in a 6-page foldout with images from the Worcester State Archives. There are features highlighting the donors and alumni behind Worcester State’s campus namings and spotlights on some of the university’s most beloved treasures, like the Socrates statue and Lake Ellie. Additionally, the issue features two first person “My WooState Story” pieces written by Class of 2024 graduates Paul Davey and Aspen Zheng.
The online edition features Worcester State’s work to build the college pipeline in the community through programs in the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Latino Education Institute, and Early College Worcester. And in a special feature, President Barry Maloney shares the qualities of what makes a Lancer a Lancer, and highlights some of the remarkable alumni who embody those qualities.
The print magazine has been mailed to all university graduates from whom the university has mailing address and will be distributed across campus for faculty and staff.
Led by University Advancement and the Office of Communications, a team of writers, designers and editorial assistants worked over 10 months to create the issue. University archivist Ross Griffiths served as a consulting editor for university history and two undergraduate interns in the Office of Communications – Paul Davey ‘24 and Mallory Dupuis ‘26 – wrote numerous stories for the issue. Art direction was provided by the magazine design team at Complex Stories, Laura McFadden and Jim McManus. The cover illustration of the Tiffany Gates opening up to campus was created by award-winning freelance illustrator Davide Bonazzi.
