A Message of Support for Our International Students

Dear Worcester State community,

By now, I am sure you have read the news of the guidance issued Monday by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security concerning international students. As president of Worcester State University, I want everyone to know I unequivocally support our international student community and object to the guidance issued hereto. The complete document can be accessed here. [1] To summarize the guidance, international students may not continue their studies if their classes will be offered exclusively online. As I announced on June 18, Worcester State will offer face-to-face and blended format options for students in the fall.

The Office of International Programs continues to engage with our international student cohort, which includes 105 active students representing 30 countries, to ensure that fall course schedules meet the spirit and letter of the guidance, and their standing as an international student at Worcester State is not in jeopardy. Further, I am working with the Massachusetts State Universities Council of Presidents to advocate at the legislative level concerning this guidance which seems premature at this present time given the uncertainty and unpredictability of the coronavirus pandemic.

I stand in solidarity with our international students and support them throughout their educational pursuits with Worcester State University. If any member of our campus community desires to help through contacting their congressional representative concerning this issue, I also welcome that support. For those with concerns or questions related to our international students, please contact Katey Palumbo, director of International Programs at 508-929-8835 or kpalumbo2@worcester.edu.
Sincerely,

Barry M. Maloney
President
