Worcester State students now have a local pathway to a graduate degree in communications thanks to an agreement signed with Clark University. The articulation agreement provides guaranteed admission and reduced tuition to students that meet program criteria.
Worcester State students majoring in communications or business with a cumulative GPA of 3.4 in their junior year are eligible to apply for admission to the Master of Arts in communications (MSC) at Clark. Seniors admitted to the MSC program will be permitted to take up to two courses at Clark at a 50 percent tuition reduction and receive credit at both universities. After graduating from Worcester State, students who continue in or start the MSC program at Clark will received a 30 percent tuition reduction.
“We’re happy to have been able to strike an agreement with our local counterpart, Clark University, which gives our students yet another opportunity to meet their goals and aspirations,” says President Barry M. Maloney. “Starting the program as a senior gives students not only a leg up in their studies, but saves students on the cost of the overall program.”
Karen Shalev ’22, a double major in visual and performing arts and communications, is the first student accepted into the MSC program. She says she was in search of the right graduate program to pursue.
“Worcester State does not currently offer a graduate program in communication and although the graduate programs here intrigued me, I knew that I wanted to focus on communication,” says Shalev who drew inspiration from her sister Maia, an alumna, a 29 Who Shine honoree and 4 +1 biotechnology program graduate.
“Dr. [Julie] Frechette [chair of the Communications Department] explained the unique advantages of the MSC program that would provide me an advantage in my future career, such as courses taught by industry professionals and work opportunities. Being able to pursue an accelerated master’s degree also allows me to start my career faster than a typical program.”
Shalev’s ultimate career goal is to work in public relations for a nonprofit organization by pursuing opportunities to apply lessons learned in the classroom to the real world.
