Chalupka Co-Authors Article on Climate Change Stressors and Aging

Stephanie Chalupka (Nursing) and Dr. Laura Anderko, the Robert and Kathleen Scanlon Endowed Chair in Values Based Health Care at Georgetown University’s School of Nursing and Health Studies, are co-authors of “Disparities in Aging: Climate Change,” which was published recently in the American Society on Aging publication Healthy Aging.

Adults aged 65 and older make up about 13 percent of the current U.S. population, but by 2040 that number is projected to increase to 20 percent. One of the most significant public-health challenges facing this aging population will be changes in the frequency and/or intensity of climate-related stressors such as hot temperatures and extreme weather events. Chalupka and Anderko discuss a number of resources that could aid in this effort.

Chalupka also is the author of “Preventing Noise Induced Hearing Loss in Firefighters” published in Workplace Health and Safety, the official journal of the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses. She examines measures to promote better hearing health through the use of quieter equipment, better work practices, hearing protection devices, and implementation of effective hearing loss prevention programs.

She also has been named to the editorial advisory board of the French-language nursing journal Revue des Soins infirmiers et Traitements.
