Frechette Recognized for Media Literacy Research

Professor Julie Frechette, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Communication, received the Media Literacy Researcher Award from the National Association of Media Literacy Education (NAMLE). This award was granted to a researcher who advanced the field of media literacy. The award was presented to Frechette for her long standing scholarship in media literacy.  Her most recent journal article, “Keeping Media Literary Critical during the Post Truth Crisis over Fake News,” was published in the International Journal of Critical Media Literacy.  It explores the importance of providing a multi-literacies framework for the digital age to help empower people in light of fake news and propaganda.

With so many people using media and technology, Frechette believes that media literacy should be advanced in a comprehensive and meaningful ways. This would allow students to successfully evaluate, produce, analyze, and access information in an effective and ethical ways. This ability would produce students who are strong communicators in the world despite their prominent familiarity and frequent involvement with the digital world.
