Frechette’s Presentation Helps Parents Understand Impacts of Screen Time

Julie Frechette (Communication) and communication student Stephanie Hemenway gave a talk recently on a subject that concerns just about every parent: how to regulate the amount of time children spend in front of the screens of their various devices.

The talk, titled “Screen Time and Raising Children in the Digital Age,” was November 15 at Paxton Center School in Paxton. It was sponsored by the school’s PTO to help parents learn about the challenges kids face growing up in the Internet and smartphone era.

Frechette shared the stage with Ellen Miller from the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, who spoke on “Social Media and Cyber Safety,” and Colleen O’Brien, a Worcester County educator, whose topic was “Raising Resilient Children.” Each speaker gave a half-hour presentation.

The event also featured a “Hidden in Plain Sight” educational display, showcasing various common household items that can be involved in at-risk behaviors and might be found in a teenager’s bedroom.

Hemenway did her senior capstone project on the topic of children and screen time.
