Helping New Commuters Feel More at Home

With 4,800-plus commuter students, our commuter programs help students connect to campus. And this year, our offerings got even better with the launch of the new Commuter Assistant Program that pairs incoming commuters with upperclassmen.

Priscilla Suero, a senior who is guiding first-year students in her new role as a commuter assistant, knows firsthand that getting involved in campus activities helps commuters make new friends and stay connected.

“As commuters, we can feel like nomads, but having the option to get more involved on campus is really worthwhile,” says Suero. “I believe the new Commuter Assistant Program will make commuter students feel more at home. After all, I was once a confused freshman commuter, but once I made connections, my experiences changed for the better.”

First-year students will meet with their commuter assistants throughout the fall semester to ask questions and check in about their campus experiences. The groups will also attend social and educational activities together.

“It is my hope that the relationships that begin through the Commuter Assistant Program continue informally through the spring semester as well,” says Commuter Services [1] Coordinator Sarah Potrikus.

Commuter Services encourages commuters to engage and connect with the campus community through programs such as Grab & Go tables, Sweet Treat Tuesdays, Make & Take novelty events, and Commuter Appreciation Week. Events like the Commuter Socials give commuters an opportunity to speak directly with WSU President Barry Maloney and other university leaders.

“I believe it’s important for commuter students to feel connected to the campus because we are the campus!” says Suero.
