Worcester State welcomed 18 rising juniors and seniors from the area for the Cornerstone STEM Connections summer program led by faculty members in the Worcester State Department of Earth, Environment, and Physics this summer. The six-day program is supported by university partner Cornerstone Bank to boost interest among underrepresented high school students in science, technology, engineering, and math.

[7]During their time in the program, the students participated in a variety of environmental learning activities including:
- Taking water samples in Patch Reservoir and Lake Ellie with Dr. Aleel Grennan
- Learning about infiltration, runoff, and overland water flow with Dr. Matt Kaufman
- Looking at the way water flows over land as runoff by manually constructing contour lines to make a life size topographic map with Dr. Matt Kaufman
- Analyzing stream flow with Dr. Allison Dunn
- Studying water density and doing lab work with Professor Kathleen Murphy
- Taking a field trip with Professor Nabin Malakar to visit the water treatment plant in Holden to learn how water is purified for delivery to the city of Worcester
