Worcester State faculty members are among international scholars whose work is featured in the book New Directions in Teaching Theatre Arts.
Tom Conroy [1](Urban Studies), and Sam O’Connell and Adam Zahler [2] (both V&PA) are authors of a chapter in the book titled “Cities as Studios: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Community-Engaged Theatre Through the CitySpeak Project.”
“CitySpeak presents an interdisciplinary curriculum of Visual and Performing Arts and Urban Studies that implements a model of research-and-arts-based urban planning and community development,” the authors state in their introduction. “By collaborating with community-based organizations that serve a city’s diverse populations CitySpeak creates mini public squares in which the voices of the city can be amplified, heard and empowered.”
The book, published by Palgrave MacMillian [3], an international academic and trade publishing company, tracks recent developments in undergraduate teaching of theatre arts, offering a practice-based approach that reflects research and case studies. It includes contributions from authors based in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and the United Kingdom.
