Stacey Luster, assistant vice president for Human Resources, Payroll, and Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunities, spoke at the 103rd Founders Day celebration luncheon for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at the DCU Center on February 20. Delta Sigma Theta is a sorority of college educated women committed to constructive development of its members and to public service with a primary focus on the African American community.
“As a proud third generation Worcesterite and the only African American woman to ever serve on the Worcester City Council, it is my honor to welcome you to the great City of Worcester,” she said. “It is quite fitting that you have chosen Worcester to celebrate the 103rd anniversary of the founding of Delta Sigma Theta, the birthplace of the first National Women’s Rights Convention, held only a few blocks from here at Mechanics Hall in 1850 and attended by such great abolitionists as Sojourner Truth and Fredrick Douglas. You are in great historical company!”
“On a more personal level, my grandmother was born in Worcester in 1913, the year after Delta Sigma Theta was founded, and when she was 12, her mother founded Mt. Olive Pentecostal Church,” Luster added.
