Mary Cosgrove Dolphin Gallery opens thought-provoking exhibition of body-neutral work by NY artist Lindsey Guile

A special show, “Unruly Bodies,” by New York-based, body-neutral artist Lindsey Guile that explores concepts of self image through the lens of contemporary feminist theory opens on Nov. 3 at the Mary Cosgrove Dolphin Gallery. The Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Department will hold an opening reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the artist.

“These pieces in particular represent my right, and the rights of the individuals I draw, to exist, as is, in spaces that we have been previously denied,” Guile said. “We are unapologetic and resilient, a strength cultivated from determination to normalize all the shapes our bodies take.”

The opening reception will feature an artist talk by Guile at 6 p.m. followed by a “meet the artist” opportunity on Friday, Nov. 4, 2022 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Gallery.

“Unruly Bodies” is free and open to the community, with viewing hours set for Wednesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., or by appointment through Thursday, Dec. 17, 2022. The Gallery is located in the Ghosh Science and Technology Center on campus.

“We’re deeply honored to showcase Lindsey’s fine art, really exceptional work that advances the Gallery’s commitment of inspiring deep thinking about the world,” said Gallery Director Stacey Parker, a VPA Professor of Fine Art and Interdisciplinary Studies. “Through her exquisite drawings, Lindsey meaningfully explores how body image can affect feelings around self worth, a topic especially relevant for students – and the greater community – today. We’re delighted to showcase her important work in the Gallery.”

In addition to her artistic pursuits, Guile has used her voice in her community speaking to young people about the importance of developing a positive self-image and navigating body image issues in the age of social media. She has also performed and directed multiple productions of the Vagina Monologues as well as sung for Broadway Cares Equity Fights Aids. Lindsey often donates art work for fundraisers in her community, particularly for the local domestic violence shelter.

Guile’s art practice embraces an inter-media approach through work that has been exhibited at Untitled Space Gallery, The Williamsburg Art & Historical Center, The Birke Gallery, The Arnot Museum, and the Dorsky Museum of Art, to name a few. Guile serves as an Associate Professor of Visual Art At Dutchess Community College, where she is also the Director of the Mildred I. Washington Art Gallery on campus.

Worcester State VPA’s Mary Cosgrove Dolphin Gallery offers five main exhibits interspersed with shorter term events throughout the year. The gallery invites artists in all stages of their careers along with our faculty and students to exhibit works that explore the established, edgy, and innovative ideas in the artistic world. The gallery’s mission is to contribute to the cultural offerings of the region by exhibiting work of vitality and interest in the contemporary art world.
