Worcester State University began as a teachers’ college and recognizes that teaching is still at the heart of what we do. Through the George I. Alden Excellence in Teaching Award, the University has a public way of acknowledging the role of good teachers in students’ lives by honoring those who have most inspired them and contributed the most to their success through teaching excellence.
Today, teaching remains the foundation upon which the integrity of our institution rests. The Center for Teaching and Learning has created the George I. Alden Excellence in Teaching Awards to provide the University with the opportunity to publicly acknowledge professors who have made a difference in students’ lives through their teaching excellence. Although two full-time tenured or tenure-track professors will be honored, the award is intended to honor all educators on our campus who are committed to teaching excellence.
All students, alumni, and faculty are eligible to nominate a full-time tenured or tenure-track professor. No self nominations will be accepted. Since this award is designed to honor professors whose teaching makes a difference in the lives of our students, we ask nominators to reflect on the aspects of teaching that comprise excellence through the following criteria: Use of effective instructional strategies · Accommodation of multiple learning styles · Fosters higher-order thinking among students (e.g., creating, analyzing, evaluating) · Commitment to student success · Commitment to continuously improving his/her classroom teaching · Willingness to innovate or take pedagogical risks · Participates in service activities related to the improvement of education at WSU
A committee comprised of student, alumni representatives, and faculty will review and judge the nominees’ materials in time for commencement in May, at which time the faculty members selected for the two awards will be honored.
Please join us in celebrating the culture of teaching excellence on our campus through your faculty nomination. The deadline for nominations is December 31, 2021. To nominate an individual, please use this form .
