Seven Worcester high-school students were awarded scholarships recently by the Latino Education Institute (LEI) at Worcester State University. Each student was recognized for their leadership role in the LEI’s education, literacy, leadership, civic engagement, and health programs, which aim to improve the academic achievement and well-being of Latino students (grades K-16) and their families from the City of Worcester.
Ziray DeJesus, Crystal Fernandez, Augustina Pedroza, Michel Salazar, Erika Guaman, Jonathan Mora, and Edwin Miranda were awarded $1,000 each for the leadership and passion they demonstrated during their time with the LEI. DeJesus, Fernandez, Salazar, and Guaman will attend Worcester State in the fall, while Mora and Miranda will be attending Boston College and Fitchburg State University, respectively.
Hilda Ramirez, executive director of the LEI, says, “We are honored to provide scholarships to the amazing young people who are contributing to solutions to improve our community and our educational system. We thank the Nellie Mae Education Foundation for making the funds available and allowing us to develop youth leadership.”
Students will be formally honored at a private event in the fall, which is tentatively slated to take place at the JMAC theater in downtown Worcester.
