Special issue of Worcester State Magazine focuses on diversity, equity and inclusion

Now online and hitting mailboxes soon: the latest issue of Worcester State Magazine: Striving toward Equity.

The issue is devoted to examining how the university is striving to create equity and promote diversity and inclusion. As President Barry M. Maloney notes in his President’s Message: “I will say we’ve made some progress so far, and there is much more to do.”

Feature stories look at the history of the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) and the transformative support it has offered to ALANA, BIPOC and first-generation students. In a personal essay, OMA’s new director, Laxmi Bissoondial reflects on her own journey with OMA that began when she was in high school. The magazine also spotlights the Latino Education Institute and the experiences of LGBTQ+ students.

Worcester State alumni are also on the frontline of advancing equity. In this issue, the magazine features Jerome Hewlett ‘87, who is working to bridge the digital divide that has left large populations of people worldwide without internet connectivity and Jasmin Rivas ‘07, recently named as the new director of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility at Old Sturbridge Village.
