Students Present at 18th Statewide Undergrad Research Conference

On Friday, April 27, 2012, eight Worcester State University students presented their research at the 18th Annual Massachusetts Statewide Undergraduate Research Conference at UMass Amherst. Two students delivered papers and six more gave poster presentations, sponsored by six WSU faculty members from four different departments.

This year the Psychology Department had the largest number of presenters, with two papers and four posters. Jennifer Gardner (faculty sponsor: Champika Soysa) presented a paper entitled, “Predictors of Stress and Well-Being: Social Capital, Self-Esteem, Popularity, and Technology Use.”

Carolyn Wilcomb (also sponsored by Professor Soysa) presented a paper titled, “Differential Prediction of Depression, Anxiety, and Stress: Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and Self-Efficacy.” Also in Psychology, Alicia Leland gave a poster presentation on “Family Environment and Impulsivity in Adolescence” and Emily Tripp gave a presentation on “Coping Skills and Impulsivity in Late Adolescence.” Professor Holly Ketterer was the faculty sponsor for both students.

Professor Seth Surgan served as the faculty sponsor for two student presenters: Elizabeth Howard, whose project was “Video Game Habits and Personality,” and Amber Goulart, whose project was, “Check You Out: Facial Symmetry and Self-Esteem Among College Women.”

Smbat Defterderian and Hurley Kane, two marketing students sponsored by Professor Jay Mahoney, presented a poster on their project, the “Worcester State Hockey Fan Bus.”

Biology major and 2012 Class Marshall Veronica Adams, sponsored by Professor Randall Tracy, presented a poster on “Emergency Department Research: An Undergraduate’s Experience Volunteering in the Emergency Department.”

Three students who had poster presentations accepted were unable to attend the conference: Huong Doan and Christin Harrington, both sponsored by Chemistry Professor Meghna Dilip, and Julie Broderick, sponsored by Management Professor Jay Mahoney. Nevertheless, they are to be commended for having carried out their research projects and prepared posters.

Congratulations to all the student participants on their hard work and initiative, and many thanks to their faculty sponsors.
