Temple Emanuel Building Purchase Now Official

A long-standing relationship has come full circle with the purchase of the Temple Emanuel building by the Worcester State Foundation [1]. The transaction was officially completed on Wednesday, June 24, with the signing of closing documents.

“While we have long had access to the Temple building and grounds, we now can make a long-term investment in the property. A use assessment will be conducted over the next year to help the University determine its best use. The space is well-suited to meet some of our classroom and event needs,” said President Barry M. Maloney, “and having full control of the parking lot will aid us, as well.”

WSU students and alumni are very familiar with the building, located steps from campus at the intersection of May and Chandler streets. Over the years, the University leased space in the building for classrooms and events, as well as in the lot across Chandler Street for parking.

The Temple Emanuel congregation that formerly occupied the building merged with Temple Sinai in 2013 and moved to 661 Salisbury St. this spring.

“We’ve always had a terrific relationship with Temple Emanuel, and we are pleased they will remain our neighbors in their new location just down the street,” said Vice President of University Advancement Tom McNamara ’94. “This is truly a historic moment for Worcester State University as we consider how we can use this facility to meet our expanding space needs.”

Now that the sale is official, a process will begin to assess how the building can be used and what renovations will be needed to optimize the space.
