Unity Day 2023 set for Sept. 26 with special events for students, faculty, and staff

Worcester State University will host Unity Day on Tuesday, Sept. 26, with a full day of events to celebrate the diverse experiences and identities of students, staff, and faculty.

New this year is an all-day immersive art-making experience that invites students, faculty and staff to take part in the creation of a mural inside the Mary Cosgrove Dolphin Gallery and the building of a Unity Tree on the lawn between Ghosh and the Administration Building. Other events include an LGBTQ+ panel, a spiritual and religious life workshop, and the third annual Unity Walk that will be followed by a flag raising ceremony recognizing the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. (See full list of events below).

The events were curated by a university-wide Unity Day Committee to achieve 10 campus goals, among them, to encourage individuals to discover new knowledge about themselves, others and the university, and also to extend themselves to others in ways that contribute to building a collective sense of belonging for people of all identities on campus.

“We really want people to make their best effort to attend at least one event on Unity Day,” said Stacey Luster, the university’s general counsel and assistant to the president for Employment and Equal Opportunity. “There’s such a variety of sessions that there’s something for everyone. Some faculty have already expressed their intent to bring their classes to Unity Day sessions. Staff members could go as an office and set the stage to have discussions about these issues.”

This year’s Unity Day is the university’s second. Luster credits former student trustee Anna Johnson ’22 as the visionary behind the first Unity Walk in 2021. “She was the one who wanted it to be celebratory,” Luster said, “and to really reflect the diversity on the campus.”

Last year, the university expanded the Unity Walk into the first Unity Day and followed up with a campus survey to gather feedback and comments on how to improve the tradition. This year’s programming reflects much of the feedbackincluding adding more dynamic and interactive events such as art making, yoga, and Q+A discussions that allow students to be active participants. In addition, the Center for Teaching and Learning will offer a program just for faculty to explore how to integrate diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) into the classroom at Worcester State.

The goal, says Luster, is for the spirit of Unity Day to continue throughout the year and in all aspects of university life.

“Students can make Unity Day a part of daily life by getting involved in committees,” Luster said. “There are the DEIJ committees, student organizations, or students can start a club to say, ‘I’m here! And I want you to recognize me.’ Students can also pursue work study positions in offices that do the things they are passionate about. I hope that students will get engaged and live a life of unity every day.”
