University marks Mass STEM Week with hands-on science, career development, and research

Worcester State University will celebrate Mass STEM Week Oct. 19-23 with a host of interactive activities, student research presentations, career workshops, and free food.

The week’s events [1] kick off on Monday, Oct. 19 with “STEM Cafe,” a breakfast event, and continue through the week with fun activities like tie dye and “Robots in the Hallway.” STEM Week will culminate on Thursday and Friday with student research posters and a session for students to connect with STEM faculty and learn about research opportunities.

All events are open to students, faculty and staff.

Massachusetts STEM Week is an annual statewide event that takes place the third week of October, to boost the interest, awareness and ability of all students to see themselves in science, technology, engineering and mathematics opportunities. Young women, students of color, English language learners, and students with disabilities continue to be underrepresented in STEM fields, yet make up a larger percentage of the overall workforce.

Worcester State’s activities are organized by the Aisiku STEM Center, with faculty advisory board representation from the Biology, Computer Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Earth, Environment, and Physics departments.

“MASS STEM Week is a tradition we are thrilled to continue at Worcester State, “ said Professor Nabin Malakar, director of the Aisiku STEM Center. “It gives our students a dynamic space to participate, present their research, and gain valuable insights into the many student-oriented programs the STEM Center provides- all while celebrating the incredible opportunities of STEM activities on our campus.”
