At NASPA’s Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Conference on June 14, Mark Wagner (Center for Civic Engagement and Service Learning) will present research on the first two years of the Community Leadership Experience at Worcester State (CLEWS).
In September 2012, the center and Residence Life and Housing Office welcomed the CLEWS living-learning community at WSU. CLEWS invites students who apply with a 2.7-3.2 GPA and who have indicated on their applications an interest in service. In September 2013, we welcomed our second CLEWS cohort and also welcomed the original cohort into a sophomore Seminar on Community Leadership.
Our goals included smoothing the transition from home to college, encouraging campus citizenship, and supporting social change.
This presentation will review the assessment of our first two years with respect to retention and student performance and work with participants in creating innovative programming aimed at retention and civic engagement on campus.
