Waters Publishes Review of Book about Black Feminists in America

Kristin Waters (Philosophy) has published a review of the book Press, Platform, Pulpit: Black Feminist Publics in the Era of Reform by Teresa Zackodnik, (Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press, 2011) in the Journal of American History 2013 99: 1264-1265.

According to her review, “Zackodnik’s study is a useful compendium of nineteenth-century black feminism, part survey, part analysis. Viewed primarily through the lenses of public-sphere theory and theories of embodiment, this work comprises five distinct but interrelated essays covering early women religious teachers, the international aspects of Sarah Parker Remond’s and Ellen Craft’s lectures, Sojourner Truth as symbol and speaker, the international aspects of Ida B. Wells’s work, and feminist black nationalism evidenced in the work of Maria W. Stewart, Sarah Mapps Douglass, and Mary Ann Shadd Cary.”
