Worcester State Theatre Performed its First Student-Directed Play

“Boom,” a smart, clever comedy by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb, was the first student-directed and student-designed play presented by Worcester State Theatre and Worcester State University’s Visual and Performing Arts Department. Performances were held February 21-24 in the Fuller Theater.

Christine Begin of Leicester, Mass., a theatre student in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, directed “Boom” as her senior capstone project, the culmination of her studies at Worcester State. She performed on stage in four other productions at WSU, including leading roles in “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” last spring and “Angels in America,” this past fall.

The rest of the creative team included students David Higginbottom of Grafton and Millbury, Mass. (scenic design), Robby Dookhran of Taunton, Mass. (lighting and sound design), and Casey Cataldo of Wilmington, Mass. (costume design).

In “Boom,” a journalism student at a university answers an ad that promises “sex to change the course of the world,” and finds herself in the underground lab of a grad student who is predicting the end of the world. As a docent from the future controls the scene, we see the fate of the human race played out between two offbeat characters.

The cast included Sara Penniman of Lunenburg, Mass. (Barbara), Maggie Chestna of Charlton, Mass. (Jo), and Scott Bezoenik of Worcester, Mass. (Jules).
