Worcester State Gets Green Light for Wellness Center

Worcester State University has been given the green light to build a $45.5 million Wellness Center, which is expected to open in Fall of 2015. The project is among a list of Commonwealth capital investments according to an updated five-year capital plan released by state officials.

The facility will feature athletic space, instructional space, studio space, student health facilities and community space. “Our student athletes and the general student population will benefit greatly from this new facility,” said WSU President Barry M. Maloney. “Not only will it support our educational programs, athletic programs and student fitness, it will be a terrific community resource.”

As an alum of WSU, Board of Trustees Chair John Brissette said he is delighted to hear of the new facility. “This is such an asset,” said Brissette, “and I applaud the Governor and Lt. Governor for their leadership on this project.”

The action gives the university the approval to begin design for the project in 2012. Construction is expected to begin in early 2013 with an anticipated opening date of Fall 2015.
