WSU Printmaking Students Accepted into Competitive Exhibition

Five Worcester State University students have been accepted into the prestigious Boston Printmakers Student Print Exhibition held on Nov. 17 to Dec. 13 at the Mazmanian Gallery at Framingham State University.

The Boston Printmakers Student Print Exhibition is a competitive juried show presenting the work of students in New England. This is the 11th student print exhibition held by the Boston Printmakers, and more than 20 prizes will be awarded to students. Around 100 pieces were chosen in total for this year’s exhibition, representing 17 of the area’s colleges and universities.

Jasmine Fouracre, Razeen Haider, Emma Massa, Megan Rouillard, and Alexis Silk are the accepted students from Worcester State. While here, they took printmaking classes, taught by Professor Amaryllis Siniossoglou.

Siniossoglou encouraged classes to submit their prints to this exhibition. Students learned of their acceptance in May.

This is Haider’s ‘19 first time having art shown in an exhibition. This was also the biology major’s first time taking a printmaking course.

I was very skeptical during the first few weeks of class because the carving required in the course was quite difficult in the beginning,” Haider said. “Eventually, with more practice, I was able to control the tools better. My favorite part of printmaking was printing with color. I was able to use different colors on paper and experiment with my design.

Haider’s print, “Imam Ali,” was accepted into the exhibition.

“The artwork features Arabic calligraphy which says, ‘Imam Ali,’” Haider said. “He was a religious leader who sacrificed his life for the betterment of mankind. He encouraged peace and generosity and helped countless people throughout his life.”

Haider is looking forward to the exhibition, and students also have the opportunity to participate in a Forum for Young Printmakers. The forum offers a full-day program of talks by professionals and print reviews.

The whole experience not only provides students with more knowledge about the art of printmaking, but also allows them to gain professional experience by exhibiting their creations.

The opening reception for the exhibition will be Nov. 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Mazmanian Gallery.
