The Worcester State University student team for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk has raised nearly $500 toward a cure for these kinds of cancers.
The Student Senate formed the team following a presentation by Emily Hern, the LLS’s Worcester coordinator. The Senate invited other student groups on campus to join the team. The team was 20 members strong by the time the walk happened on Sunday, October 14.
“The response was excellent, and we were able to put together a team comprised of resident students, commuters, resident assistants, orientation leaders, and members of WSU Pride Alliance, Surreal Games, The Student Voice, Dance Team, and the Women’s Forum,” said Marion Calabro ’14, chair of the Student Senate. “A graduate from Worcester University in England who studied at WSU last year also came. “
”We all donned blue and gold for the walk,” she added. “Before leaving campus, we painted each other’s faces with blue and gold to further amp up our pride.”
Prior to the walk, the team held two coin drives and accepted online donations. The online fundraising site can accept donations through January 1, 2013.
Calabro credits Worcester State Foundation Treasurer Edward L. Sherr for getting the Student Senate involved. She met him at a Foundation Board meeting last academic year. An active member in the LLS’s Worcester chapter, Sherr encouraged the Senate to invite Hern to a meeting to discuss the organization’s work.
