More than 260 students will receive graduate degrees from Worcester State University on Friday, May 17, at 6 p.m. in the Wellness Center. Graduating master’s degree student Poliana Alarcón Bustos will give the keynote address to graduates.
Along with May 2019 graduates, the ceremony will also recognize graduates from August and December of 2018. Honors and award recipients will also be acknowledged.
Alarcón Bustos graduated in 2010 from Universidad Mayor in her native Chile with a bachelor’s degree in performing arts. After graduating, she taught in a public non-profit foundation, engaging students in the academic and artistic fields and reaching out to low-income neighborhoods.
In 2015, she began attending the Intensive English Language Institute at Worcester State University. She then enrolled in the Master of Arts in Spanish program and was awarded a graduate assistantship within the department, working in the Translation Center. Currently, Alarcón Bustos works at the Latino Education Institute at Worcester State in the LASOS Program (Latina Achievers in Search Of Success).
This fall, Alarcón Bustos will join the Ph.D. Program in Hispanic Language & Literature at Boston University. She says she is excited to explore social issues through artistic expression and hopes to return to South America to nourish the local culture and youth through teaching and activism.
