Worcester State University’s Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Department has announced plans for a meaningful return to in-person musical performance with a variety of upcoming presentations showcasing students’ diverse Fall 2021 work.
“We’re thrilled to connect our students with live, in-person audiences again,” says VPA Professor and Applied Music Coordinator Kyle Martin. “While VPA Music leveraged new and innovative ways for our students to continue playing music together through any distance since the start of the pandemic, our students’ return to playing music in shared space this semester with their peers and our music faculty has been really exciting. We’re moved and honored to now share their work and deliver live musical performances by our students to the Worcester State community once again.”
The Fall 2021 music performance schedule is as follows:
- String Ensemble Concert
Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m.
The Exhibition Area of the Student Center
- African Drumming Ensemble Performances
Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
The Exhibition Area of the Student Center
- WSU Jazz Concert
Thursday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m.
Sullivan Auditorium
- Mosaic of Music
Thursday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
Fuller Theater, 2nd Floor of Administration Building
“It seems on any given day as I walk around campus, VPA’s music faculty and students are providing the soundtrack to Worcester State’s fall semester,” says VPA Chair and Professor of Theatre and Interdisciplinary Arts Sam O’Connell. “From Carlos Odria’s performance at the Unity walk to African Drumming’s occasional outdoor class sessions to the many music performances of our students and ensembles at the end of the semester, the Fall 2021 semester highlights the powerful and irreplaceable role of the arts in the lives of performers and audiences alike. We’re profoundly grateful for the talented work of our faculty, staff, and students who have also reopened the Mary Cosgrove Dolphin Gallery and brought laughter to the community this semester through the theatre production of Picasso at the Lapin Agile. While it’s important to acknowledge ongoing challenges of times that are not over, VPA looks forward to continuing our momentum with the musical performances still to come, and more exciting presentations in the spring.”
All of the presentations are free and open to the public. Masks are required for all audience members, regardless of vaccination status. The Mosaic of Music performance in Fuller Theater will require guests to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test (within 72 hours) upon entry. Photos of documents and results through the Coverified app will be accepted. Contact VPAMusic@worcester.edu for more information about the upcoming events, music courses, and other performance offerings.
