The Massachusetts’ Board of Higher Education voted unanimously today to approve Barry M. Maloney as the new president of Worcester State University, replacing President Janelle C. Ashley, who will retire this June.

“We are delighted with the board’s action today,” said Worcester State University Chair of the Board of Trustees John Brissette.  “The university is poised for great things and Barry Maloney is ready to take the reins and lead us forward.”

After the BHE vote, Maloney said, “I am committed to keeping students at the center of everything we do and working hard to bring much-needed resources to the university.”

He also thanked the Worcester State University Board of Trustees and Presidential Search Committee.  “I am deeply grateful for their trust and appreciative of the opportunity they gave me to meet so many people on the Worcester State campus,” said Maloney.  “I look forward to meeting everyone on campus and in the greater community and getting to work.”

“The Board of Worcester State University had a strong vision of what they were looking for in their next President and conducted a search process with confidence and clarity,” said Commissioner Richard Freeland. “I look forward to working with President Maloney and expect that Worcester State University will prosper under new leadership.”

When he takes office in July, Maloney will serve as the eleventh president of the university, which was founded in 1874.
