The Worcester State University Board of Trustees voted Monday, April 4, to recommend that the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education approve Barry M. Maloney as the new president of the university replacing Janelle C. Ashley, who will retire in June. Maloney currently serves as Vice President of Student Affairs at Westfield State University.

“He is a perfect fit for Worcester State University,” said Board of Trustees Chair John Brissette.  “Maloney’s experience as interim president at Westfield State University, his leadership in both institutional advancement and student affairs, combined with his commitment to public higher education will serve him well at Worcester State University.”

Maloney was selected following a national search which began last fall, shortly after President Ashley announced her retirement. “I commend the Search Committee Chair Trustee Vice Chair Ronald Valerio and all the hard-working members of the search committee for their work,” said Brissette. “They were thorough and thoughtful in their deliberation.”

Following approval by the board of higher education, Maloney will serve as the 11th president of Worcester State University, which was founded in 1874. He is expected to begin on or about July 1, 2011.
