The Visual and Performing Arts Department has offered the community multiple opportunities to enjoy free musical performances this spring on the Worcester State University campus.
Coming up on Monday, May 5, the Spring Mosaic of Music concert will take place in Fuller Theater at 7 p.m., featuring diverse musical styles performed by students in the Visual & Performing Arts (VPA) program.
“These student musicians have honed their skills through one-on-one lessons with VPA faculty specializing in a range of instruments and voice,” said Professor of Music Kyle Martin. “The concert will feature solo and duet performances by vocalists, pianists, and a guitarist, along with select collaborations between students and faculty. Those who plan to attend the concert can look forward to an eclectic mix of styles, including musical theater, pop, opera, jazz, and blues—there’s truly something for everyone!”
Earlier, on April 29, the Jazz Ensemble performed its semiannual concert in Sullivan Auditorium. Audience members enjoyed the music of Fats Waller, Kander & Ebb, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Benny Golson, and Mike Barone.
The Jazz Ensemble concert was held in memory of Tom Bellino. “Tom played with the WSU Jazz Ensemble for over five years,” said Worcester State Jazz Ensemble Director Steve Gagliastro. “He was a Grammy winner with four nominations, an ASCAP award winner, composer, arranger, recording engineer, saxophonist, and great human being. We wish Tom’s friends and family, especially his wife, Terry, our deepest condolences.”
On May 1, the African Drumming Ensemble performed in Sullivan Auditorium, and the Good Time Vocal Band played covers of songs by Dolly Parton, Pink Floyd, Rodgers & Hart, and many more in the Sheehan Multipurpose Room.
All Worcester State students have the opportunity to take music lessons for course credit with practice space available. In addition to joining Worcester State Jazz, The African Drumming Ensemble, or The Good Time Vocal Band, students may become part of ensembles in brass, guitar, string, piano, and wind.
