Worcester State College President Dr. Janelle Ashley dedicated the new Fairlawn Foundation Clinical Skills Nursing Laboratory, Wednesday October 22 in the Ghosh Science and Technology Center. “Over the years, the Fairlawn Foundation has been a wonderful partner with our Department of Nursing,” said Ashley. “Your support exemplifies the traditions and values of the original Fairlawn Hospital and its commitment to nursing excellence. With your assistance, we have been able to fully equip this education and training center with the latest technology and equipment,” she added.

Students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the college toured the new lab after the dedication. The lab features IV pumps, wheelchairs, electronic thermometers, wall-mounted health assessment units, and blood pressure units. The most notable additions to the lab are a child manikin and a female manikin. “This will help our students learn and process information before they get in the professional setting,” according to Andrea Wallen, Ph.D., Chair of the Nursing Department.

Mary Aleksiewicz from the Fairlawn Foundation said,” it made me want to be a student again.” She stressed the importance of nursing students to be able to learn their clinical skills in such a safe environment. In prior years, students lacked training on industry standard medical equipment until they were in a clinical setting or on the job.
