As Worcester State University celebrates its 150th anniversary, the university will soon launch a new, two-day fundraising event called WooGives. All of the dollars raised during this event will help close the gaps on ongoing projects throughout the school, while also ensuring that athletics programs and student clubs and organizations have the funding they need to remain active.

WooGives will begin on Monday, Feb. 10, at 9 a.m. and will run through Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 4:15 p.m. As Worcester State was founded in 1874, this event will last exactly 1,874 minutes, an homage to the school’s history. While donations made outside of this time period will not count toward the WooGives event, the giving page will remain active for those who need to miss the window. The required minimum to submit a donation is $5, and donations can be made at alumni.worcester.edu/WooGives.

“People recognize that 150 years is a major milestone for Worcester State,” says Caitlyn Costello ’13, assistant director of development at the university and the coordinator for this event. “The teams that are competing in WooGives are the next generation to change the community. Your support helps them to continue to move forward and accomplish their goals.”

Thirty-six teams will participate in WooGives, separated into four categories: Clubs & Organizations, Athletics, WSU Departments, and Other Areas of Support. As donors make contributions on the WooGives website, the fundraising data will be updated in real time, with information about the number of donors for each team, the amount of money raised, and the progress percentage towards each team’s end goal.

Donors are welcome to give to any team as many times as they would like. A prize will go to the team in each category with the largest number of donors. These winners will be announced on the WooGives website and on Worcester State’s social media pages two weeks after the event ends, on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Previously known as Chandler’s Challenge, WooGives marks a new chapter for Worcester State University as it celebrates its 150th anniversary. Chandler’s Challenge, which began in 2018 as the university’s first annual giving campaign, a bracket-style competition with prizes awarded at the end. WooGives updates that model to a leadership board competition and has the benefit of being more inclusive of the many teams on campus.

“There is so much learning that goes on outside of the classroom,” Costello said, “and WooGives encompasses that.”
