People’s United Community Foundation recently announced that it has awarded a $4,000 grant to the Latino Education Institute at Worcester State University. This financial support will help to fund an expansion of activities offered through the Institute’s Latinos Involved in Discovering Educational Resources program in the coming year.
LIDER provides an educational after-school program that engages Latino students and her/his parents in activities that facilitate access to higher education in order to increase enrollment in colleges and universities.
The Latino Education Institute at Worcester State University, which just celebrated its 10th anniversary, offers a variety of programs (grades K-16) that highlight the strengths and dynamics of Latino families, reduces school dropout rates, encourages enrollment in higher education and promotes informed citizenry. The LEI offers seven diverse programs, serving over 1,500 youth and their families with education and advocacy programs each year and celebrates its 10th anniversary this October.
“Over the past decade, the LEI has dedicated its efforts to improving the academic achievement and well-being of Latino students and their families,” said President Barry M. Maloney. “Our firmly held belief that education opens the door to a successful life, civic engagement, employment and life-long learning, guides everything LEI does. We’re grateful for the financial support from People’s United Community Foundation, and People’s United Bank in helping to make the LEI, and the LIDER program a success.”
