Fifty-five runners and their supporters gathered on September 20, a sunny Saturday morning, to participate in the first event of Family Day at Worcester State University, the second annual Run for a Scholar.

The 5K, laid out through the pleasant west side of Worcester, raises money for the McCarthy Coyle Wagner Scholarship and other programming by the newly named The Honorable John J. Binienda Center for Civic Engagement (formerly the Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement). This year’s run had sponsorship from CVS Pharmacy, Chuck’s Steak House in Auburn, Fidelity Bank, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and Olympia Sports.

The Central Mass Striders (CMS) are also critical to the race. Members of CMS lay out the race, handle registration and post the results on Cool Running.

Among those results include some firsts: the race’s overall winner was a female runner, Andrea Rocha, with a time of 19:59. Professor Anne Falke took 5th place overall, winning her age group with a time of 21:45. Senior nursing student Ashley Tocci became a two-time winner by again taking the 20-29 female division. The top male finisher was Humberto Cruz, finishing second in the race with a time of 20:19.

This year, the race featured mothers and daughter and fathers and sons running as part of the Family Day programs. Some were returners, but there were some new families as well.

The WSU Women’s Basketball Team and the Community Leadership Experience Program (CLEWS) supported the race, providing logistical support.

In all, the race will support student scholarships and programs such as the Jimmy Fund Council at WSU.
