The Corporation for National and Community Service has named Worcester State College to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.
What an incredible honor,” said Worcester State College President Dr. Janelle Ashley. “At Worcester State College, we believe that it is important to, not only provide the most robust academic experience for our students, but also to teach them the value of giving something back.”
“I think what we are doing right, and what distinguishes our efforts,” said Dr. Corey Dolgon, professor of Sociology and director of the Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement, “is that we take collaboration seriously and much of our work is shaped by our community partners. “For example, Dolgon’s Applied Community Research Class completed a neighborhood impact study focusing on transitional housing and group homes.
Worcester State College has contributed more than 2,500 hours of service with over 180 students participating in various organizations both in the Worcester community and abroad. Community partners include Abby’s house, APW, Dismas house, Friendly house, Worcester County Food bank, Worcester Public Schools and many more. Some of the service hours were funded by the Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement’s faculty fellows.
Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.
The Honor Roll is jointly sponsored by the Corporation, through its Learn and Serve America program, and the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps, and the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering.
