Friday, April 13 was a lucky day for grades K-6 at Chandler Magnet School because they danced their hearts out under the artistic direction of WSU choreographers, Nikki Beatrice ’15, Spencer Hart ’14, Lesli Patrock ’15 and Delfi Vargas ’13. As part of a service-learning experience in the Health Sciences Department, the choreographers taught the children a variety of dances, ranging from step dancing to hip hop to Latin to break dancing to free movement.
Chandler Magnet’s Physical Education instructor, Christine McCarthy, welcomed the choreographers into four of her classes and provided a high level of assistance. The audience of more than 200 parents, fellow classmates, teachers and WSU students filled half the gym and provided that special attention performers love to make them shine.
“Works in Progress” began with the choreographers sharing some of their polished dance moves to a very appreciative audience. Vice Principal Christina Guertin, a dancer herself, was very supportive of the program and looks forward to seeing next fall’s choreographers. Principal Ivonne Perez supported the dance project from beginning to end.
