Worcester State College’s 33rd annual Nurse Pinning Ceremony will take place Thursday, May 14 at 6:00 p.m., in the Sullivan Auditorium. Caitlin Stover RN, PHCNS-BC,  and  Dr. Barbara Giguere, RN, PhD.  will deliver the keynote address.  Senior nursing student, Timily  Henrickson, will deliver the class reflection.   The pinning ceremony has been planned and organized by the 2009 senior nursing officers including  Co-Presidents Elyse Lavin and Jilian Parzych;  Co-Vice Presidents Nadine Malatesta and Amy Monaghan; Secretary Shaun L’Esperance; Treasurer Timily Henrickson; Class Representatives Tara Bonardi and Nicole Carvelli; and Advisors Instructors Ellen Rearick and Kate Baldor.

As part of the ceremony, the WSC Chorale, under direction of  Christie Nigro, will perform  two songs.

Instructor Caitlin Stover graduated cum laude from Boston College School of Nursing in December of 1997 and since has worked as a nurse in several different agencies including the Department of Corrections and Norwood Hospital. While raising her children, who are currently ages 7 and 8, Caitlin worked part time as a residential nurse manager for many different group homes all within The Home for Little Wanderers Agency.

Stover, who  joined  Worcester State in 2006 as a graduate assistant and adjunct faculty member, was appointed this year to a full time faculty position and graduated in May with a master’s degree in Community Health Nursing Worcester State College.  She was awarded a gold medallion for having the highest GPA in the program.  She is credentialed as a Public Health Clinical Nurse Specialist and is currently a matriculated doctoral student at UMass Worcester Graduate School of Nursing in the PhD program with a research focus on the health of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Adolescents.  She serves as the level coordinator of the sophomore class and works as the Resident Learning Assistant Faculty Liaison with first year nursing students in order to assist with a smoother social and academic transition to college life.

Dr. Barbara Giguere has been a professor here at Worcester State since 1980. She received her R.N. from Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing, her Bachelors of Science from Worcester State College, her Master’s from the University of Connecticut and her doctorate from UMass Amherst.  Dr. Giguere has RN experience in areas such as medical surgical nursing, intensive care, cardiac care, and in the emergency room.  Dr. Giguere designed the WSC Nursing curriculum with the beliefs of the legendary nursing theorist, Florence Nightingale in mind.  She serves as a preceptor to graduate students at UMass Worcester and has also precepted students from the University of Connecticut and Walden University. Currently, Dr. Giguere teaches medical surgical nursing in the class room here at Worcester State and in the clinical setting at UMass.
