Earth Day Activities Go Virtual

Keeping with current societal trends, month-long activities to celebrate Earth Day are going virtual this year, according to Sustainability Coordinator Steve Bandarra. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, April 22.

“We’re hoping to reach out to students and others who want to show their continued commitment to the environment, and who also may be looking for some sort of normalcy in their lives,” he says.

Since the beginning of April, the WSU Office of Sustainability has been sharing Earth Day Network Daily Challenges on Twitter, which offers micro challenges, such as “use less paper towels,” “try fixing something you would have thrown away,” or “do a plastic audit to see where you can use less plastic.”

“We will share on the days we think those challenges are great for our community and sometimes include ideas or other resources to go with them,” Bandarra says.

During the week of April 20 to April 24, students will be asked to show their appreciation for the environment by posting pictures or videos of nature/outside/their environment to show how they appreciate their surroundings. Participants who tag @WSUgreen will be entered into a raffle to win a prize. Also that week, the office will host an environmentally themed scavenger hunt for the whole family.

They are recommending 13 movies across 4 different streaming platforms:

On Hulu: “The Biggest Little Farm,” “Climate Warriors,” “Blackfish,” and “Dr Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who”

On Disney+: “Paris to Pittsburgh,” “Before the Flood,” “America’s National Parks,” and “Frozen 2”

On HBO: “Gasland Part 2,” “Ice on Fire”

On Netflix: “Tiny House Nation,” “Our Planet,” “Growing Up Wild”
