Worcester State University won the 2019-2020 Hands-Only CPR Challenge, sponsored by the American Heart Association, thanks to efforts led by members of the Student Nurses Association (SNA). In the challenge, nursing students from area colleges compete to see who can teach the most students, community members, faculty, and staff about hands-only CPR.

“Winning this competition was definitely a team effort from all students in our nursing program. We took advantage of events happening on campus, hosted our own Hands-Only events, and even taught our friends and families,” says Quinn Ferreira, SNA president.

“We are very proud of our students for the many creative approaches they utilized to teach Hands Only CPR to the community at large,” says Angela Latter, M.S., R.N., one of two faculty advisors to the SNA. “While spearheaded by the Worcester State University chapter of the Student Nurses Association, all undergraduate nursing students contributed to this success. Collectively this accomplishment was achieved through multiple small student-led initiatives throughout the academic year, which was a shift from our previous large event focus. We believe this was the key to our success.”

“We would like to extend our congratulations to the nursing student body once again,” says Danielle Shaver, M.S., R.N., the SNA’s other faculty advisor. “We are all so proud of them. This was an exercise that demonstrated how a few nurses can reach so many in the community, and these student nurses rose to the challenge. We look forward to being able to exceed expectations, yet again next year.”

As a result of the win, Worcester State will be added to a Traveling Trophy, which will be presented in person later in the year. WSU will also be recognized at the Annual Meeting of the American Heart Association Board in Central MA on Wednesday, June 17, at 6 p.m., which will be a virtual meeting held via Zoom.
