Every year approximately 3.5 million individuals experience homelessness. Homelessness does not discriminate. Families with children, single adults, teenagers, and elderly individuals of all races can be found struggling with the devastating effects of being homeless. The Student Government Association at Worcester State College has been fighting homelessness in Worcester since 1991 with the Annual SGA Auction.
Since the first auction, Worcester State College has raised and donated nearly $150,000 to the Mustard Seed and Abby’s House. The Mustard Seed Foundation of Worcester provides food and emergency services for the city’s homeless and also runs summer programs for children. Abby’s house is a local shelter for homeless women. Two years ago, the SGA chose to add a third organization, Sherry’s House. Sherry’s House is a place where children and their families from all over the Central New England community can come and receive the social, emotional, educational and financial support they need, day in and day out, to overcome childhood cancer. Every item sold at the auctions has been donated by area businesses, families and individuals. All the organizing is done by the students, staff and alumni of Worcester State College.
Through the generosity of donors, SGA raised over $21,000 this past year. This coming year, their goal is $22,000. In order to reach this goal, donations of products, services or gift certificates is vital. This year’s auction will be held Thursday, March 26, 2009, in the Student Center Blue Lounge. The preview will begin at 4:30 p.m., with the auction commencing at 5:30 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the auction will be rescheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2009. This event is open to the college community and to the public.
