Gloriann Switzer, an adult student in the Division of Graduate and Continuing Education, received the prestigious Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society scholarship for the academic year 2020-2021. More than 100 students from 66 universities across the United States applied to the scholarship this academic year. Switzer was one of 14 students selected nationwide to receive the prestigious award.

Switzer is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies in Child Advocacy. She currently works full time as a paraprofessional kindergarten aide, part time as a coordinator of a high school after-school music lesson program, and as a volunteer CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for foster children who are in the custody of the Department of Children and Families in Worcester County. Switzer is also highly involved at Worcester State University where she has participated in numerous events for adult students and submitted art pieces to showcase in the Adult Student Newsletter. Switzer expects to earn her bachelor’s degree in 2021.

“I am still shocked but thrilled about the scholarship. It really was a team effort because everyone at WSU continues to be so supportive and knowledgeable,” says Switzer. “A special thanks goes to Dr. Mark Wagner who was kind enough to submit my letter of recommendation as one of the requirements for this scholarship.”

Marilyn Cleary, assistant dean for the Division of Graduate and Continuing Education, says, “I am thrilled that Gloriann’s hard work and tenacity has been recognized by Alpha Sigma Lambda. She is only the second Worcester State University student to receive this honor.”

Alpha Sigma Lambda awards 14 scholarships yearly to assist adult learners financially while earning an undergraduate degree. As part of the application process, students must submit a letter of recommendation and a personal statement demonstrating their commitment to their scholarship and leadership.
